My duties for the Republic are weighty and consume much of my time, the inspector of meats declared in his sonorous orator s voice. The matter you are investigating was settled, so far as I am concerned—so far as anyone in Venice except my dear mother is concerned—many years ago, and its resurrection now can serve no purpose. It contains an illustration and a brief description of the cannon formerly called "pot de fer or "fire-pot and now known as the "Christ Church Gun . Accdg to some manuscripts, the Republic of Venice possessed some cannons as early as 1326(Ref 3) and that the Moors used cannons at the siege of Alicante(1331) Tarifa (1340) and Algecitas(1342XRefs 3 8a)... 

I looked as directed. The man wore the floor-length gown and round, flat-topped bonnet of the nobility, with the strip of cloth called a tippet draped over his left shoulder, but in his case these were all colored violet, to show that he was a member of theCollegio, the steering committee of the Senate. I do not know all of the twelve hundred or so noblemen of Venice, those eligible to sit in the Great Council, but I try to keep up with the inner circle, the sixty or seventy who actually mn the Republic. He was new to me.
