A scroll vacuum pump uses two interleaved Archimedean spiral-shaped scrolls to pump or compress gases (see Fig. 1.9). One of the scrolls is fixed, while the other orbits eccentrically without rotating, thereby trapping and compressing gases between the scrolls and moving it towards the outlet. 

There are two main drawbacks in scroll pumps the production of Polytetrafluoroethy-lene (PITT) powder dust due to the friction between the fixed and the moving part moreover, since in the present commercial versions the motor is not in vacuum, the tightness is not the best. 

As in high vacuum generation in macroscopic scale, the micropump is divided into two parts. As a backing pump for the pressure range from a few 102 Pa to atmospheric pressure a micro-sorption pump is under investigation, which relies on surface adsorption effects, as well as a scroll pump, which ranks with its displacement principle among the classic backing pumps.

The backing pumps serve two purposes (1) to quickly remove atmospheric gases and establish the minimum vacuum required for the operation of high-vacnnm pumps, and (2) to remove the exhaust gases coming from the high-vacnnm pnmps. Rotary-vane and scroll pumps are the common types of backing pnmps.

Q. There are other types of vacuum pumps, seldom found in cleaning machines. A fifth type of pump is a dry pump, which can be a screw, scroll (high speed), or claw design. Booster pumps are also dry and a generally rotary lobe type. 

In recent years so-called dry helium leak detectors have been developed. They do no longer contain any oil-sealed vacuum pumps but instead use diaphragm or scroll vacuum pumps sealed by elastomers in a dry manner. Although these... 

ESEM allows observations of big samples (200 mm0 x 80 mm height x 5 kg) in high or low vacuum for non-destructive observation and analysis (e.g. of art objects). ESEM has been used for studying fibres and wet samples, including objects of cultural heritage, as the Dead Sea Scrolls.
