Viruses of low or moderate virulence, such as poliovirus, vaccinia, adenovirus, and herpesvirus, and viruses not ordinarily considered to be human pathogens, such as SV40, can under certain conditions infect humans and produce a state of clinical or sub-clinical illness (224, 267). The conditions under which the infection can occur vary tremendously between individuals in addition, an individual s resistance to infection can be reduced by various factors that produce immunosuppression. For example, reduced immunological competency caused by immunosuppression or immunodeficiency has been shown to facilitate infection or promote the growth of virus-induced tumors in animals otherwise resistant (8, 9, 265, 445) (see also Section 11.6).
