UWVis spectroscopy

Cinnamic alcohol and its derivatives are starting materials for the synthesis of coumarin dyes used in food industries and as laser dyes. By irradiation at 254 nm cinnamic acid or the alcohol exhibits an extremely complex reaction spectrum using UWVis-spectroscopy. Until the early 1980s, most mid-IR spectrometer systems were double-beam dispersive grating spectrometers, similar in operation to the double-beam system for ultraviolet/visible (UV/VIS) spectroscopy described in Chapter 2. These instruments have been replaced almost entirely by FTIR spectrometers because of the advantages in speed, signal-to-noise ratio, and precision in determining spectral frequency that can be obtained from a modem multiplex instrument. There are NIR instruments that are part of double-beam dispersive UWVIS/NIR systems, but many NIR instruments are stand-alone grating instruments. 

The polymerisation of various monomers within mordenite and ZSM-5 channels has been investigated by a variety of spectroscopic techniques, including resonance Raman, Photoacoustic Infrared (PAIRS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)(7d-79). This paper summarises previous data and reports recent results from ESR and UWVIS studies. Collation of this research allows the factors affecting the polymerisation reaction within zeolite channels to be identified.
