Use of data on accidents

In addition to the use of qualitative and quantitative accident data when identifying and evaluating risk (see sections 2.4.1.2 and 2.4.1.3), there is a need to consider the relative occurrence of different accident types, in 

Accidents, whether they result in injury, damage, disease or loss, need to be controlled. Similarly those that have no end result - i.e. the near-misses - should be considered for control action. 

To enable an accident control system to be developed, it is necessary that all accidents are reported, record, investigated and analysed, so that after remedial action has been decided, plans can be drawn up to prevent a recurrence. The most important question to be asked in any accident investigation is What action has been taken to prevent a recurrence  

The collection of accident data on a much broader base to facilitate the planning of control action has been undertaken by a number of researchers and one of the most widely applied accident ratios is that propoxmded by

Then there are other significant considerations about the use of data on accidents at work the pos-sibihty to select them by different variables allows to have specific data to analyze safety in particular conditions, for example during the night, or with specific kind of workers (workers without experience or on stage), or belonging to a specific geographical area. 

Part III leads the reader through a number of different methods for the collection, analysis and use of data on accident risks. The focus is on how to prevent accidents through learning from individual events and conditions and from accumulated accident experience from many incidents. The advantages and disadvantages of the different methods are discussed.
