Upright walk

There are two main models that attempt to explain the success of the dinosaurs. According to one, dinosaurs out-competed the mammal-like reptiles over a long period of time due to superior adaptations such as upright walking. The other model, which is supported by fossil evidence, says that the dinosaurs took advantage of openings created by two mass extinctions. By the end of the Triassic, dinosaurs had taken over the land. They were dominant for 165 million years, from the Late Triassic until their extinction at the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary some 65 million years ago. This massive extinction may have taken place in only a week or lasted for tens of thousands of years this has not been determined yet, but further study may provide an answer. One prominent theory for the cause of this... [Pg.736]

She took my hands like a child, but I had to haul her upright. I put one of her arms around my neck and half walked, half carried her to her bedroom. As I said, she would still be worth a tumble, but in that condition she did not tempt me at all. I tucked her in, pecked a kiss on her forehead, and left. [Pg.39]

With the discovery of the fossilized remains of an Australopithecus who lived about 3 to 4 million years ago, dubbed Lucy, the theory that man developed from the Proconsols gained popularity. Lucy was just over one metre high and walked upright. She provided a unique insight into what a.Man-ape in Africa might have looked like. [Pg.51]

Typical vertebrates- like dogs and cats and fish - usually have their head-tail body axis parallel to the ground. The head is at the front end and the tail at the back. All limbs (legs or fins) are used for locomotion. In this configuration, we know the head- tail axis as the anteroposterior (main) axis. The upper side of the animal is called its dorsal side and the lower side its ventral side. In humans, the anteroposterior axis is held upright. Only the hind limbs are used for walking. Your front is your ventral side and your back your dorsal side. We use the terminology for a typical vertebrate in the sections that follow. [Pg.131]

In the human body, the soleus is a powerful muscle in the back part of the lower leg, i.e., the calf. It runs from just below the knee to the heel, and is involved in standing and walking. In the upright posture it is responsible for pumping venous blood back into the heart from the periphery, and is often called the skeletal-muscle pump or peripheral heart. The reduction of vein diameter by means of compression bandages helps to improve the function of the muscle pump by enhancing the efficiency of the reverse flow. [Pg.113]
