If this holds throughout the crystal the composition is A2XS. The most symmetrical way in which octahedral groups AXg can be joined to three others by sharing three edges is shown at (d). Since each X is common to two octahedra the formula is AX3. [Pg.88]

The four structural units (a)-(d) form the bases of the structures of numerous inorganic compounds in which the bonds are covalent or covalent-ionic. It is also convenient to represent diagrammatically, by means of 3-connected nets, the structures of certain crystals in which the structural units (which may be ions or molecules) form three hydrogen bonds. In the hydrates of some acids one H is associated with H2O to form H3O which is a unit of type (a). In certain hydroxy-compounds each OH group is involved in two hydrogen bonds, and accordingly a molecule of a dihydroxy-compound may be represented as at (e), it [Pg.88]

A synthetic pathway that appeared to be most convenient and promising for the synthesis of LC polymers was proposed and proved in Moscow State University in 19736,8 10) and involved the use of so called comb-like polymers containing long paraffinic fragments in each monomer unitl2,33) (Fig. 2). Macromolecules of comb-like polymers are constituted of two types of structural units — the main chains and the side chains. Their behaviour is mutually dependent as they are chemically linked and at the same time both parts are sufficiently independent because the side chains are long enough. [Pg.178]

Since there are numerous types of structural units in lignin, it is highly unlikely that a single technique will be sensitive to all of them. In addition to the standard analytical techniques, we have been applying Raman spectroscopy to the studies of lignin in pulps. This report focuses primarily on Raman spectroscopic studies of mechanical pulps. Previously, we applied this technique to the studies of celluloses, chemical pulps, and wood. [Pg.27]

There are more than 50 types of boron-oxygen anions and polyanions in anhydrous borate, borosilicate, boroaluminate and boroberylate structures. However, all of them consist exclusively of three basic types of structural units of different composition (Fig.l). The first set of these basic types identify with BO3 triangles (A) and B04 tetrahedra ( ) as fundamental (elementary) structural units (FSU) which are shown in Fig. 1, I. They are isolated in orthoborate structures and can be merged in pyro-, meta-, and polyborates. [Pg.96]

The second basic type of structural units is usually built up of several FSU (from 2 to 5) joined by sharing common O atoms. There is a rather limited number of these anionic groups. They are shown in Fig. 1, II,1 and II.2 and designated below as combined basic structural units (CSU). Only two of them, 2A and 3A, can be isolated in the structures of anhydrous pyroborates and some metaborates, respectively. The rest of the structural units of this type are as components of various one-, two- and three-dimensional BnOm polyanions by sharing their free 0 atoms. [Pg.96]

Equation 1 is a homodesmotic reaction having the same numbers and types of structural units on both sides of the equation. Note that the cyclopropyl position (2° carbon) is modelled by the isopropyl carbon (also 2°). It is worth noting briefly that... [Pg.1086]

Carbohydrates (disaccharides) in aqueous solution are favorable examples for ROA studies furnishing an informative band structure over a wide range of the vibrational spectrum. Their complex and highly coupled normal modes generate strong ROA bands that produce patterns characteristic of the various types of structural units. ROA data can be used to confidently specify the central component of carbohydrate stereochemistry. For disaccharides [92] ROA can provide the nature and conformation of the glycosidic link, and can also probe extended secondary structures of oligosaccharides [93]. [Pg.1156]

Furthermore, when it is possible to make comparisons, the new correlations are often of higher quality than the correlations [24,25] for similar properties of simple molecules. Many properties of simple molecules can only be predicted reliably by using connectivity indices if different correlation equations are used for molecules containing different types of structural units. By contrast, similar properties of polymers often turn out to be predictable for all polymers by using a single correlation equation containing a few parameters. [Pg.48]
