Types of Interface Coatings

Kerans [78] recently reviewed several novel approaches for providing interface control in ceramic composites. These included  [Pg.342]

Easily cleaved materials — Layered structures such as /3 -alumina and micaceous materials with sufficiently low shear strength to provide debonding are used as fiber coatings. [Pg.342]

Porous oxide — A low shear strength interface is postulated if the strength of the interface material is reduced by making it porous. [Pg.342]

Damaged coating — Microcracks in the coating permit debonding. [Pg.342]

Ductile or porous metal — A matrix crack is blunted by yielding in the metal coating. [Pg.342]
