Two-cone shape

An explosive lens is used to generate a flat detonation wave. The explosive lens consists of two cone-shaped segments of explosives, an inner cone and an outer cone, which are fitted together as shown in Fig. 9.2. In this test, a 25-nun diameter cylinder of rubber is moulded around two cone-shaped test pieces such that the tips of the test pieces are separated by 10 mm (ASTM D 429, Method C). It has the distinct advantage that the shape of the test piece tends to concentrate the stress towards the rubber-substrate interface. Results are sensitive to the tip radius of the cone, which must be carefully controlled. 

Cryptophane A host that combines the structural features of a cryptand and a cyclophane. Typically two cone-shaped cyclotriveratrylenes are linked with three bridges to create an enforced cavity.

Both the cone-shaped and the wedge-like pore give rise to simple, hysteresis-free behaviour. The meniscus is nucleated at the apex of the cone (Fig. 3.14(a)) or at the intersection of the two planes of the wedge (Fig. 3.14(b)), giving a spherical meniscus in the first case and a cylindrical one in the second. In both systems the process of evaporation is the exact reverse of that of condensation, and hysteresis is therefore absent. 

A further development in the process is the use of universal refrigerant-cooled tanks, designed to ferment, age, and finish beer in a single tank without the usual transfers. The Uni-Tank has a shallow cone bottom rather than the typical steep cone shape of usual fermenting tanks. Fermentation and maturation of the beer within a single vessel take approximately two to three weeks. 

These observations have been corroborated by those of Suslick and co-workers who compared the MBSL spectra of 0.1 M Na2S04 in 95% H2S04 from two spatially distinct regions of the cone-shaped cavitation zone under a 20 kHz sonotrode [7]. The spectrum recorded close to the horn tip was a featureless continuum, whereas the spectrum recorded far from the tip exhibited pronounced... 

Based on IsraelachviUi s predictions, KeUermann et al. (2004) designed a cone-shaped dendro-calixarene molecule displaying two polar carboxylate-terminated G2 dendrons on one face and four C12 chains extending from the opposite face (Fig. 11.24).
