Fully Coupled Six-Dimensional Calculations of the Water Dimer Vibration-Rotation-Tunneling States with a Split Wigner Pseudo Spectral Approach. [Pg.345]

Recent advances in spectroscopic methods have enabled the water pentamer to be studied experimentally. Infrared cavity ringdown spectroscopy has been used to examine the intramolecular absorption features of the gas-phase water pentamer, which match the spectral features of the pentamer rings in liquid water and amorphous ice (Paul et al., 1999 Burnham et al., 2002). Vibration Rotation Tunnelling (VRT) spectroscopy has been used to provide a more direct probe of the water pentamer intermolecular vibrations and fine structure in liquid water (Liu et al., 1997 Harker et al., 2005). The water pentamer was found to average out... [Pg.52]

VIBRATION-ROTATION TUNNELING SPECTROSCOPY OF MOLECULES AND DIMERS... [Pg.261]

This chapter is devoted to tunneling effects observed in vibration-rotation spectra of isolated molecules and dimers. The relative simplicity of these systems permits one to treat them in terms of multidimensional PES s and even to construct these PES s by using the spectroscopic data. Modern experimental techniques permit the study of these simple systems at superlow temperatures where tunneling prevails over thermal activation. The presence of large-amplitude anharmonic motions in these systems, associated with weak (e.g., van der Waals) forces, requires the full power of quantitative multidimensional tunneling theory. [Pg.261]
