Tungsten oxytetrachloride

Tungsten oxytetrachloride is an orange, air- and moisture-sensitive solid that is soluble in nonpolar solvents. It reacts with protic solvents such as alcohols and water and forms adducts with many Lewis bases. [Pg.140]

Molybdenum and tungsten oxytetrachlorides, M0OCI4 and WOCI4, react with anhydrous H2S in boiling benzene to form the brown solids M0S2CI2 and WS2C1214, ... [Pg.85]

Tungsten oxytetrachloride [13520-78-0], WOCl4, mp 211°C, bp 327°C, is a red crystalline solid. It is soluble in carbon disulfide and benzene and is decomposed to tungstic acid by water. It may be prepared by refluxing sulfurous oxychloride, SOCL, on tungsten trioxide (12) and purified after evaporation by sublimation. [Pg.287]

Tungsten oxytetrachloride forms splendid transparent, ruby-red, needle-shaped crystals which melt at 210° C. and boil at 227-5° C., giving a red vapour of normal density. - By water it is decomposed, giving first the yellow oxychloride, and further, hydrochloric and tungstic acids. A certain amount of the yellow oxychloride is also formed from it by loss of chlorine on sublimation in air or oxygen. ... [Pg.197]

The solvent is removed under vacuum, leaving the compound as orange-red crystals. When dry, the solid is finely ground with a mortar and pestle in a glove bag, and placed in a Schlenk flask, which is then evacuated for several hours. The yield of tungsten oxytetrachloride is about 120-135 g, 80-90%. The solid may smell slightly of sulfinyl chloride, but it is of sufficient purity for most uses. A higher-purity material may be obtained by sublimation at 140° and 5-10 mm Hg. Anal. Calcd. for WOCl, Cl, 41.5 W, 53.8. Found Cl, 41.2 W, 53.1. [Pg.197]

Reactions of cyclo-octa-1,3-diene with molybdenum oxytetrachloride and tungsten oxytetrachloride have been carried out and the novel compounds (C8Hn)2-MoOClj and (CgHjj)2WOCl2 have been isolated Reactions of these products with mono, di-, and tri-hydroxyphenols have been studied. ... [Pg.344]

Caution. When exposed to moisture, tungsten hexachloride and tungsten oxytetrachloride evolve hydrogen chloride, a toxic and corrosive gas. [Pg.139]
