Tungsten nitrido complexes

Only one nitrido Ww complex has been documented. This was prepared by the action of Me3SiN3 followed by oxidation on dinitrogen W° complex 83 (Eq. (31)) [36]. It has been proposed that the reaction of 83 with trimethylsilylazide affords a Wn complex bearing two N3-ligands a subsequent two-electron oxidation of the metal center then affords nitrido tungsten complex 84. 

An unusual reaction of W111 with nitriles has been reported by Schrock et al. to provide metal a nitrido tungsten complex [46], Treatment of 98 with acetonitrile or benzonitrile provides the tungsten carbyne 99, along with the nitrido complex 100 (Eq. Chromium(IV) and chromium(V), previously encountered as the oxides and halides and as unstable intermediates in solution, are now represented by complexes of ligands stabilized by heavy substitution against oxidation by the metal ion, and oxo and nitrido derivatives. These remain unimportant oxidation states compared with molybdenum and tungsten.

NMR resonances of the alkylidyne carbon atom and selected IR absorptions for new carbyne complexes are given in Table 11. In other studies, the Mo and NMR spectra of molybdenum and tungsten alkylidyne complexes were determined by Enemark and co-workers (23). The metal atoms in the alkylidyne complexes were found to be less shielded than those in nitrido complexes but more shielded than those in compounds containing metal-metal multiple bonds.

Direct carbonylation of primary amines to give N,N -symmetrical ureas can be achieved in good yield (56-67%) using a nitrido tungsten(IV) carbonyl complex. The reaction is carried out at room temperature under nitrogen, and is followed by oxidation with air at ambient pressure. Unfortunately, the process requires a stoichiometric amount of the carbonyl complex, and ureas are only obtained with primary amines since secondary amines afford formamides [763].
