Tungsten complexes anionic pentacarbonyl

Pentacarbonyl[methyl(methoxy)carbene]tungsten and other carbene complexes containing a hydrogen atom a to the carbene carbon atom react with butyllithium (but also with OMe" ) at low T to generate carbene anions. The moderate reactivity of these carbene anions toward carbon nucleophiles, including epoxides, aldehydes, a-bromoesters and a, -unsaturated carbonyl compounds can be used to prepare carbene complexes inaccessible via other synthetic routes (see refs. 7-9). The anion generated by treatment of (CO)5Cr[C(OMe)Me] with BuLi in THF at — 78°C is isolated as the air-stable bis(triphenylphosphane)iminium salt . [Pg.111]

Vanhoye and coworkers [402] synthesized aldehydes by using the electrogenerated radical anion of iron pentacarbonyl to reduce iodoethane and benzyl bromide in the presence of carbon monoxide. Esters can be prepared catalytically from alkyl halides and alcohols in the presence of iron pentacarbonyl [403]. Yoshida and coworkers reduced mixtures of organic halides and iron pentacarbonyl and then introduced an electrophile to obtain carbonyl compounds [404] and converted alkyl halides into aldehydes by using iron pentacarbonyl as a catalyst [405,406]. Finally, a review by Torii [407] provides references to additional papers that deal with catalytic processes involving complexes of nickel, cobalt, iron, palladium, rhodium, platinum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, rhenium, tin, lead, zinc, mercury, and titanium. [Pg.368]

Various metal-metal single o-bonded complexes have been obtained by the reaction of metal carbonyls with metal-carbon o-bonded porphyrins or by the reaction of metal carbonyl anions and chlorometalloporphyrins (Scheme 14). For example, the reaction of dimanganese carbonyl and methyl indium(III) porphyrin gives manganese pen-tacarbonyl indium porphyrin In(Por)Mn(CO)5. The same compound is isolated when chloroindium porphyrin is allowed to react with the manganese pentacarbonyl monoanion. In the context of the anionic polymerization of CA derivatives, as considered in Section 10.3.2.2.1, it is notable that the polymerization of cyanoacrylates is also photoinitiated by substituted pyridine pentacarbonyl complexes of tungsten or chromium, i.e. M(CO)5L with M = Cr or W, and L = 2- or 4-vinylpyridine [60]. Photo-released pyridine adds to CA, and the resulting zwitterion initiates the anionic chain polymerization (see Scheme 10.16). [Pg.296]
