When Vasco returned, he found me at my side of the big desk behind a pile of every book on cryptography in the Maestro s library—Roger Bacon, Johannes Trithemius, Girolamo Cardano, Leon Battista Alberti, Giovani Porta, Blaise de Vigenere. Al-Kindi was there, too, but I can t read Arabic. Needless to say, I had made small progress with those I could read.

German abbot Johannes Trithemius devised polyalphabetic ciphers in 1499, and French diplomat Blaise de Vigenere did the same in 1586. Both used the tableau, which consists of a series of alphabets written one below the other. Each alphabet is shifted one position to the left. De Vigenere added a key to his tableau. The key was used to determine the order in which the alphabets were used.
