Trinity, doctrine

Priestley, like Stephen Hales, was a clergyman and a natural philosopher. Unlike Hales, he was also very much a dissenter in matters of religion and politics, where his refusal to accept the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and his enthusiastic support for the French Revolution combined to make him loathed by the establishment. But he was essentially conservative in matters of chemical research, even though he made many new discoveries. [Pg.58]
