Trimethylphosphine Iron Complexes

Elding, Inorg. Chim. Acta, 20, 65 (1976). The Hg2+ ion alone does not remove chloride ion completely, but needs assistance by silver perchlorate. Use of the silver salt at the outset is not appropriate since Ag2 [PtCl4 ] is predpitated.

Trimethylphosphine complexes of transition metals are of considerable interest since the spectroscopic data from these complexes are usually simple and the steric requirements of the ligand are small compared with those of other tertiary phosphines. Because of the tedious preparative procedure of this phosphine, its application in this area has been restricted. However, recently laboratory1 and industrial2 procedures have been developed that make this ligand more easily obtainable. 

Many P(CH3)3 complexes of the first-row transition metals may be conveniently prepared by direct reaction with the appropriate anhydrous chromium (II), (III),3 cobalt(II),4 iron(II)s or hydrated iron(II),s nickel(II)4a 6,7 salt. The compound [(CH3)3P] 2FeCl2 is the starting material for a variety of phosphine iron complexes.4,8,9 

A bent, two-armed glass vessel with a sintered disc e resembling that previously described by Strohmeier10 and Klein et al.11 (Fig. 1) is fitted with flasks (100 mL) at A and at B, which is connected by a curved glass adapter d. The apparatus is attached to a high-vacuum system by means of the pivotal glass joint c.

A recent report 121) on the reactions of tetrakis(trimethylphosphine) iron, Fe(PMe3)4, with carbon dioxide reveals a rich and varied chemistry, illustrating many of the reaction modes of C02 with low-valent transition metal complexes. Two primary reactions of C02 with Fe(PMe3)4 are noted, as a consequence of the two isomers in equilibrium (49).
