Tumor cells, however, also show a reduced pyruvate and acetyl-CoA oxidation rate as involved in the tricarboxylic cycle. There is a lower sensitivity to oxygen, and a lower growth hormone requirement. Thus, as a potential anticancer measure, there is the objective also of enhancing respiration or oxygen uptake, thereby favoring the tricarboxylic acid cycle over lactic acid or lactate formation.
