Triage in children

The normal physiological values used in the adult triage sieve can be used in children but will result in significant over-triage. Substitute values are necessary. Sieves are available for children based either on length (top of head to feet) or weight. 

As an alternative, a paediatric triage tape can be used. The child is laid by the side of the tape and the appropriate protocol read off according to the child s length. 

Send uninjured survivors to survivor reception centre 

Professional responders may be called upon to provide immediate advice in the event of an incident. Simple, clear advice based on the go in, stay in, tune in approach should be provided. Certain information will be useful to have should an emergency occur and this is shown in Box 2.6. Once at home, it will be important to collect together the following items (in case of the need to evacuate)
