Tremolite, synthesis

A problem was encountered in the synthesis of tremolite. All synthesized material contained 1-2% quartz and diopside. N. Chatterjee (personal comm. 1971) has made a rigorous study of this problem and concluded that tremolite synthesized at 750 contains 5 to 10 mol percent Mg Si O (OH). A survey of over 1200 amphi-bole analyses (Deer et al. 1963 Leake, 1968) produced only nine analyses in which the calculated structural formula contained between 1.90 and 2.10 Ca, less than 2.10 "X" cations, and greater than 7.80 Si. Boyd (1959) and Troll and Gilbert (1972) also describe the difficulties of tremolite synthesis. It appears that, at temperatures above 700 C, stoichiometric Ca Mg Si 0 (OH) may not be stable. 2 5 8 22 2... [Pg.230]
