Traube

The surface tensions for solutions of organic compounds belonging to a homologous series, for example, R(CH2)nX, show certain regularities. Roughly, Traube [145] found that for each additional CH2 group, the concentration required to give a certain surface tension was reduced by a factor of 3. This rule is manifest in Fig. lll-15b the successive curves are displaced by nearly equal intervals of 0.5 on the log C scale. [Pg.90]

For example, the measurements of solution osmotic pressure made with membranes by Traube and Pfeffer were used by van t Hoff in 1887 to develop his limit law, which explains the behavior of ideal dilute solutions. This work led direcdy to the van t Hoff equation. At about the same time, the concept of a perfectly selective semipermeable membrane was used by MaxweU and others in developing the kinetic theory of gases. [Pg.60]

The 5-methyl-5-ethyloxazolidine-2,4-dione may be prepared by reacting methyl ethyl ketone with sodium cyanide and with ammonium thiocyanate followed by desulfurization. This intermediate may also be prepared by condensing a-hydroxy-a-methylbutyramide with ethyl chlorocarbonate or by condensing ethyl a-hydroxy-a-methylbutyrate with urea. Another method described (Traube and Aschar, Ber., 46, 2077-1913) consists in the condensation of ethyl a-hydroxy-a-methylbutyrate with guanidine followed by hydrolysis. [Pg.1162]
