Transboundary transport of sulfur and nitrogen compounds in the Eurasian continent

TRANSBOUNDARY TRANSPORT OF SULFUR AND NITROGEN COMPOUNDS IN THE EURASIAN CONTINENT [Pg.17]

It is well known that during the winter the major weather patterns in East Asia facilitate the transboundary transport of air pollutants from west to east, from land to sea and the reverse in summer. Pollutants can thus be transported from country to country in the whole region of East Asia. [Pg.17]

The results of the preliminary calculations of sulfur and nitrogen transboundary transport in the Eurasian continent consist of two main parts—deposition maps and mass budget tables (Sofiev, 1998). Some examples of them are presented below. [Pg.17]

East Asia is practically a self-polluted region. The bulk of emission sources are located close to the coast, whilst the prevailing wind direction leads to further transport of these masses to the ocean and relevant islands. This effect is clearly seen in all deposition maps, the quite short transportation distance of all compounds over the marine surface is probably explained by a fast increase of the dry deposition velocity onto the water surface with growing of wind speed and the creation and crashing of waves. [Pg.18]
