Towne, Robert

Julius Robert Von Mayer was born in 1814 in Heilbronn, a small town on the Ncckar river, halfway between Heidelberg and Stuttgart. Interested in science as a youth, he decided on a career in medicine, and in 1832 began his medical studies at the University of Tubingen. After completing his studies there in 1838, he received his M.U. degree.

If we are looking for an address where we might find under one roof representations of maker s knowledge, experimentalism (expressed in the Baconian sense as the constraint of nature ), chemistry, alchemy, and the mechanical philosophy, we only have to check in at the house of Katherine Boyle on London s Pall Mall, even then one of the town s more ritzy neighborhoods. There her brother Robert had a laboratory and what was going on in that laboratory and at several other locations where he worked for almost forty years is one of the best examples of how alchemy and chemistry relate to the process of the Scientific Revolution. 

Screenwriter Robert Towne has a distinctive, ironic, and rather leisurely descriptive style. Nonetheless, he condenses a great deal of information into a few lines on this first page of a late draft of Chinatown. The script opens with close-ups of a series of snapshots of a man and woman making love. These visuals are accompanied by the sound of anguished moans and a male voice crying out, "Oh, no " At this point, we cut to the following scene ...
