Tower blocks

The police agreed. Three days later, Police Commissioner Chesnon and eight constables seized Cagliostro at his house in rue St.-Claude and marched him ignominiously down the boulevard St.-Antoine to the Bastille. He was placed in a cell called La Calotte within tower block D, the Tower of the Comte. He didn t know that his darling Seraphina was arrested a few hours later and locked up in a different tower. [Pg.141]

To be fair, poor or limited precommission cleaning is not always the case the development of fast-track mechanical services, for HVAC and similar built environment projects, in the mid 1980s (especially for office tower blocks in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe) is a case in point. [Pg.331]

As an example, the battery-limits capital cost can be estimated for the production of 10,000 t/yr of ethylene (qv) from ethanol (11). Seven processing blocks, ie, vaporizer, reactor, water quench, compressor, dryer, distillation, and energy recovery, can be identified. The highest temperature is 350°C (reactor), and the highest pressure is about 1.7 MPa (17 atm) (compressor, two towers). If a materials-pressure factor, + of 1.03 is assumed, then for N = 7 0 = 0.87 1/0 = 1 64 and f =0 K = 6.3. This gives the 1981 cost as 4.4 X 10 . The 1991 battery-Hmits investment can be obtained, by updating with the CE Plant Cost Index, as 5.3 x 10 . ... [Pg.443]

System designers often think dampers bloek airflow and are suitable to prevent baek drafts in idle towers. This is not the ease. Airfoil dampers simply hamper fan housing efficiency- they do not block airflow. Air Inlet Screens are always part of blow through, counterflow towers to protect people from rotating equipment. Some designs can be a hazard when accessible from the underside and require the specifier to call out additional screening. They can be a worthwhile accessory when there are nearby trees even when not required for safety reasons. Air inlet screens should be eliminated on towers utilizing inlet ductwork. Inlet ductwork may also make it necessary to block extraneous air entry such as from the underside when towers are elevated. [Pg.80]

An explosion in a pyrolysis gas plant in Rumania demolished a cooling tower. It fell on the administration block, killing 162 people. Many people w ho would not build offices close to an operating plant would consider it safe to build them close to a cooling tower. It is doubtful if this is wise. [Pg.221]

A typical ethane cracker has several identical pyrolysis furnaces in which fresh ethane feed and recycled ethane are cracked with steam as a diluent. Figure 3-12 is a block diagram for ethylene from ethane. The outlet temperature is usually in the 800°C range. The furnace effluent is quenched in a heat exchanger and further cooled by direct contact in a water quench tower where steam is condensed and recycled to the pyrolysis furnace. After the cracked gas is treated to remove acid gases, hydrogen and methane are separated from the pyrolysis products in the demethanizer. The effluent is then treated to remove acetylene, and ethylene is separated from ethane and heavier in the ethylene fractionator. The bottom fraction is separated in the deethanizer into ethane and fraction. Ethane is then recycled to the pyrolysis furnace. [Pg.93]

FRACHEM Block - This block of programs is linked to the subroutine created by the Program Generator to solve multistage electrolyte towers which are not limited to being in complete chemical equilibria. The FRACHEM Block and applications are described separately in a recent paper (12). [Pg.235]

The scrubber design implies that the excess sludge be regularly removed from the packed section. This sludge settles in the lower zone and reduces the air throughput. For cleaning, the blocks of the packed tower are removed (Fig. 6), flushed out or dried and knocked out. The cleaning must take place every 3 months and 2 to 3 hours. [Pg.269]

Bacteria are also responsible for destruction of wood, for example in cooling towers,20 by breaking down the cellulose fibers. Certain bacteria derive their metabolic energy from the iron(II)-iron(III) redox cycle. These iron bacteria can proliferate to the extent that they block pipes. In any case, they will discolor water. In addition, objectionable growths of algae can occur in water tanks or circuits, given even minimal supplies of nutrients. Consequently, biocidal agents are widely used in the treatment of industrial, as well as municipal, water supplies. [Pg.279]

Berl saddles, Lessing rings, Nielson propeller packing, Hechenbleikner blocks, Stedmann packing, Bregeat multiple spirals etc. Here, as in the case of plate towers, the liquid flows from the top of the tower and the gas enters at the bottom... [Pg.7]
