Syed S.H. Rizvi is international professor of food process engineering and has served as director of graduate smdies at the Cornell Institute of Food Science, Ithaca, New York. He received his PhD from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, ME in chemical engineering from the UnivCTsity of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and BTech from Panjab University, Chandigarh, India. He teaches courses devoted to engineering and processing aspects of food science and related biomaterials.

Joel Lexchin is an Associate Professor in the School of Health Policy and Management at York University and a practicing emergency physician in Toronto. He has been a consultant on pharmaceutical issues for the governments of Ontario, Canada, and New Zealand as well as the World Health Organization and the Australian National Prescribing Service. 

Though both discoverers deserve recognition, Menten faced the additional challenge of being a woman scientist at a time when professional advancement for women was very difficult. Bom in Port Lambton, Ontario, Canada, Menten graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in 1904 and an M.B. in medicine in 1907. For the 1907 to 1908 year, she was appointed a fellow at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York, where she studied the effect of radium on tumors. Returning to Canada, Menten continued her medical studies, and in 1911 she became one of the first women in Canada to receive a medical doctorate.
