Quite naturally, too, people are worried about food safety. We are now starting to see FDA approval of food products from biotechnology. These are listed in Table II. There are a number of plant products currently on the market which have been developed through the application of recombinant DNA technology. Two varieties of tomatoes, mini red peppers and two variations of carrots are currently available in supermarkets. The Flavr-Savr tomato was introduced in early 1994 later the crooked neck squash was approved. Although it is too early to assess the ultimate commercial success of these ventures, initial acceptance of the Flavr-Savr tomato in California was well above expectation. [Pg.15]

First, looking at Antisense technology in Suits and vegetables, for example the Flavr-Savr tomato, there is a clear public advantage, shelf life and flavor are improved.
