Tomatoes cultivars

The range (p,g/100 fresh weight) of lycopene and P-carotene in selected tomato cultivars can be 20-62000 and 35-2200 respectively, and of P-carotene and a-carotene in selected carrot cultivars 1100-64000 and 530-36000 respectively. Some of the carotenoids may be present as fatty acid esters (Breithaupt and Bamedi, 2001). More extensive listings can be found (O Neill et al, 2001 van den Berg et al, 2000 Hart and Scott 1995).

Tomato cultivars are available specifically for growing under cover, but most outdoor cultivars grow well in an unheated greenhouse. Indeterminate types, which make tall plants with a single vertical stem called cordons, make best use of limited space. Bush and trailing types do well in pots and baskets. Eggplants and peppers make more compact, bushy plants, to 30 in (75 cm) tall.

Proteases. Proteolytic enzyme activity (hydrolysis of amide bonds of proteins and peptides) has received very little study related to disease resistance. Be sure you need the type of resistance that the cultivar you select offers. For instance, it s not necessary to plant a Verticillium-resistant tomato cultivar if your soil is not infested with Verticillium fungi. 

Sample heirloom cultivars for resistance. Heirloom plants that have been carefully selected and cultivated for many generations also may contain high levels of pest resistance. Some heirloom tomato cultivars, for example, have been screened and selected by gardeners for such a long time that they are naturally resistant to diseases such as Verticil-lium and Fusarium wilts. 

Yield stresses can also be obtained by extrapolation of shear rate-shear stress data to zero shear rate according to one of several flow models. The average reducing sugar/soluble solids content was 63.5% The average ratio of fructose/glucose was 1.17. Both values compare with those of standard commercial tomato cultivars (8).
