Tips for Determining Tasks

Step 1 in the previously described five-step CPM process is Determine the Tasks. Tasks their identification and relationships—are the foundation of the method. Consider some tips for identifying tasks for use in the CPM. 

When in doubt, go small Finally, when in doubt about a task being too large, break it into two or more smaller tasks. 

Cross check tasks against deliverahles At this point in the task identification process, you may have many tasks. Avoid doing tasks that are not needed, which adds cost, but not value. Also be careful not to omit necessary tasks. Perform a reality check by studying the evolving network. Begin with the project objective in mind, that is, what the client, owner, or customer expects and work backwards. Confirm that all deliverables are covered, that is, you have all the necessary tasks to produce those deliverables. Also confirm that you do not have unnecessary task.
