Thought Assignment

For each model system developed in this book, make it a habit to write out the systems description whenever you encounter that model. Tliis includes the kinetic theory of gases, thermodynamic systems, the Born model, the Debye-Htickel model, electric circuit models of electrochemical systems, etc.

Mercaptoethylamine 11.29) (cysteamine) effectively prevents radiation injury. It has been shown that, in a mouse irradiated with 750 rad (whole-body single dose), significant increases of iron and copper occur in the bone-marrow, adrenals, spleen, liver, lungs, and thymus, and of iron in muscle and kidney (Yendell, Tupper and Wills, 1967). One school of thought assigns the radio-protective properties of cysteamine to its ability to sequester the heavy-metal cations released from cells by irradiation Qones, 1960). Other hypotheses are summarized by P. Brown (1967). 

Geochemical studies of sulfate ia streams have beea approached ia various ways. For example. Ref. 17 is a review of Hterature oa sources of sulfate ia the dissolved loads of streams, especially ia areas where developmeat effects are likely to be stroag. It was coacluded that for North America as much as 60% of the average yield of sulfate carried to the ocean is related to human activities. This study assigned a higher proportion of the total yield of sulfate ia European streams to human sources, but for other continents it was thought the effects of human activities to be relatively minor. 

In the case of the 2-dimethylamino- (or 2-amino-)methylene derivatives, the products were at first thought to be pyrimido[4,5-c]isoquinolines (267), but later work with 6-(N-substituted amino)uracils assigned the structures of the products (268) as belonging to the isomeric pyrimido[4,5-f>]quinoline system (74CB2537), in agreement with the regioselection rules above. 

Camphene is the only well-recognised terpene which occurs in nature in the solid condition. It occurs, like pinene, in both optically active forms. The constitution of this terpene has been a matter of considerable difference of opinion, and the constitution assigned to it by Semmler based on its similarity to bomylene was thought by many to be finally accepted. Recent researches, however, have clearly established that the formula assigned to it by Wagner is the correct one. 

The absorption band shifts to lower energy from top to bottom in the table. Roughly speaking the degree of covalency increases also in this sequence. Therefore it may be thought that we are dealing with one and the same transition. This, however, is unlikely. The literature contains many different, and sometimes not firmly based, assignments.
