Thorium tetrafluoride production

Typical impurity analyses of thorium oxide feed and thorium tetrafluoride product are shown in Table 4. [Pg.208]

In a comparable American process, operated on a semi-production scale by the U.S.A.E.C. Ames Laboratory, zinc chloride is found to be the most satisfactory booster, as a 10 per cent admixture with the thorium tetra-fluoride. A 25 per cent excess of calcium is used over the stoichiometric requirements of the thorium tetrafluoride. [Pg.239]

The only examples of compounds of this type are the borohydrides, MIV(BH4)4 (MIV = Th-Pu) and MIV(MeBH3)4 (MIV = Th, U, Np). These compounds are conveniently prepared by reaction, for example, of the metal tetrafluoride with A1(BH4)3 in a sealed tube, followed by vacuum sublimation of the product.159 The neptunium and plutonium compounds are liquids at room temperature and are more volatile than the thorium, protactinium or uranium analogues. [Pg.1175]

The tetrahalides are the thorium halides of greatest practical importance. The tetrafluoride ThF4 is the preferred starting material for large-scale production of thorium metal (Sec. 10.4). ThF4 has been proposed as fertile material in the fuel mixture of the molten-salt reactor. The tetraiodide has been used as feed material in the iodide process for making very pure thorium metal (Sec. 10.4). [Pg.291]
