Thiol-gold reaction

These bis(thiolato)gold(I) complexes are useful models for providing insights into the chemistry of the end products of the reactions between 1 1 gold thiolates and any excess (including other) thiol, including some reactions with proteins in vivo. 

These gold exchange reactions are prevented by prior alkylation of this protein thiol. Because of its lower affinity for gold when Cys-34 exists as a disulfide species, gold-to-sulfhydryl and gold-to-total albumin ratios are considered when analyzing data. Albumin with the Cys-34 blocked by alkylation is often used. 

The use of tetraoctylammonium salt as phase transfer reagent has been introduced by Brust [199] for the preparation of gold colloids in the size domain of 1-3 nm. This one-step method consists of a two-phase reduction coupled with ion extraction and self-assembly using mono-layers of alkane thiols. The two-phase redox reaction controls the growth of the metallic nuclei via the simultaneous attachment of self-assembled thiol monolayers on the growing clusters. The overall reaction is summarized in Equation (5). 

Thiols like pyridine-2-thiol yield (carbene)gold thiolates, and onium salts give cationic (carbene)gold ylide complexes, isolated and characterized as the perchlorates.170 The reaction of dithiocatechol with (cyclohexylisocya-nide)gold chloride affords a carbene complex [(CyNC)AuC(NHCy)2]+Cl-, which co-crystallizes with a neutral tetranuclear complex [(CyNCAu)2Au2(S2C6H4)2].224...
