Thiiran 1-Oxides Episulphoxides

A stepwise process is favoured for the addition of aryldiazomethanes to diaryl-sulphines to give thiiran 1-oxides (21—68% yield), which readily decompose to olefins. The reaction of dihalogeno-carbene precursors with diarylsulphines

The photoelectron spectrum of thiiran 1-oxide has been reported, and orbital-correlation diagrams have been constructed. The c.d. spectra of some chiral thiiran 1-oxides have been determined.

An episulphoxide intermediate has been proposed in the thiophilic reactions of sulphines (see Chap. 3, Pt II, p. 162). The necessity of a pseudopericyclic process in the isomerization of tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)- Dewar thiophen 5-oxide has been questioned. Calculations of the electronic transitions of thiiran and methylthiiran oxides have been related to their u.v. and c.d. spectra. ...
