H. Miyasaka, S. Arai, A. Tabata, T. Nobuto, N. Mataga, and M. Irie, Picosecond laser photolysis studies on photochromic reactions of l,2-bis-(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)maleic anhydride in solutions, Chem. Phys. Lett. 230, 249-254 (1994). [Pg.222]

Fulgides and Fulgimides - A theoretical study of the photochromic compound 2,3-bis(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)maleic anhydride has been reported. The photochromic properties of the indyl fulgide ( )-l-benzyl-2-methyl-3-indylethylindene(isopropylidene) succinic anhydride have been studied. The photochromism of (232) and (233) has been investigated. The cyclizations are reversible and the materials show reasonable fatigue resistance. [Pg.103]

Figure 38 Photochromism-based 3D optical data storage, (a) The read-write mechanism using two different wavelengths (1064 and 532 nm) proposed by Renzepis etal. [54] (b) Spirobenzopyran absorbs a 1064 nm photon and a 532 nm photon to become merocyanin. (c and d) gives 1,2-bis(2-methyl-1-benzothiophen-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene and 2-(1,2-dimethyl-3-indolyl)-3-(2,4,5-trimethyl-3-thienyl)maleic anhydride which are highly stable molecules with potential application in 3D optical data storage. The illustration of the write/read optics is reproduced with permission from ACS. Closely related to the vinylbenzo[b]thiophene reactions are the condensations of the bisbenzo[b]thienyls 108 and 110 with maleic anhydride in the presence of the dehydrogenating agent chloranil to form 419 and 420, respectively (55-78%), which are hydrolytically decarboxylated (37-62%) to the parent pentacycles 56 and 54 by means of soda lime at 400°C.146... [Pg.218]
