Adverse effects thiabendazole

The answer is c. (Hardman, p 1688.) Thiabendazole has been shown to be effective against Strongyloides, cutaneous larva migrans, and Trichuris. Adverse effects consist of nausea, vertigo, headache, and weakness. Treatment usually involves oral administration for several days. It has been found to be ineffective in Ascaris, N. americanus, E. vermicularis, and T. saginata. [Pg.70]

Thiabendazole is much more toxic than other benzimidazoles and more toxic than ivermectin, so other agents are now preferred for most indications. Common adverse effects include dizziness, anorexia, nausea, and vomiting. Less common problems are epigastric pain, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, pruritus, headache, drowsiness, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Irreversible liver failure and fatal Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been reported. [Pg.1157]

Among chemotherapeutic agents, thiabendazole, a representative benzimidazole compound, is most effective for strongyloidiasis. However, it has problems with safety, because its use can cause adverse effects and liver dysfunction at a high incidence that can be severe. High incidences of liver dysfunction were observed with mebendazole, and the rate of eradication was not sufficient with albendazole [63, 64]. [Pg.415]
