Thermostatic stage

Optical Microscopy and Transmittance Measurement. A microscope equipped with polarizing optics and thermostatted stage was used in certain studies described below. Transmittance measurements were made by use of a power meter (Lexel model 504) positioned close to the cell, on the optic axis of the incident beam. The cell was mounted on the light scattering stage for these measurements, and the transmittance was determined for light with wavelength 647 nm. 

We have developed an in situ cooling system to perform IR measurements at very low temperatures under atmospheric pressure by combining a commercial thermostatic stage (Linkam FT-IR 600) and nitrogen gas flow system to avoid frost formation (Figure 1). 

Thermostatic control of the gas supply to the heater is required so that the air-off temperature can be controlled. This is achieved by a two-stage control that opens a valve partly on low rate and fully on high rate.

The cell stage was thermostat ted, and means provided for motion in the x-y directions perpendicular to the incident beam axis. One hour was allowed for thermal equilibrium before light scattering measurements subsequent to any temperature change. 

Silicone rubber compounds can be molded, extruded and calendered. The vulcanisation of rubber compounds occurs in two stages 1) in a press or steam boiler at high pressure and 120-150 °C 2) by thermostatic control at atmospheric pressure and 200-250 °C. 

Part of the plant (e.g., the pumps and inlets for solids) is above a thermostat bath level, part (e.g., the melting pots for solids, micromixer, all tubing) is immersed into it to be exposed to a hot environment. Solid waxy materials like palmitic or stearic acid are molten in the pots encompassed by a water or oil bath. Being liquehed, these materials are pumped into an eight-component caterpillar micromixer where water and other ingredients are added (Fig. 6.16).
