Thermal properties, polymeric materials diffusivity

Polymerization of styrene in microemulsions has produced porous solid materials with interesting morphology and thermal properties. The morphology, porosity and thermal properties are affected by the type and concentration of surfactant and cosurfactant. The polymers obtained from anionic microemulsions exhibit Tg higher than normal polystyrene, whereas the polymers from nonionic microemulsions exhibit a lower Tg. This is due to the role of electrostatic interactions between the SDS ions and polystyrene. Transport properties of the polymers obtained from microemulsions were also determine. Gas phase permeability and diffusion coefficients of different gases in the polymers are reported. The polymers exhibit some ionic conductivity. [Pg.82]

Closed-form expressions from composite theory are also useful in correlating and predicting the transport properties (dielectric constant, electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, thermal conductivity, gas diffusivity and gas permeability) of multiphase materials. The models lor these properties often utilize mathematical treatments [54,55] which are similar to those used for the thermoelastic properties, once the appropriate mathematical analogies [56,57] are made. Such analogies and the resulting composite models have been pursued quite extensively for both particulate-reinforced and fiber-reinforced composites where the filler phase consists of discrete entities dispersed within a continuous polymeric matrix. [Pg.726]

Isothermal frontal polymerization (IFP) is a self-sustaining, directional polymerization that can be used to produce gradient refractive index materials. Accurate detection of frontal properties has been difficult due to the concentration gradient that forms from the diffusion and subsequent polymerization of the monomer solution into the polymer seed. A laser technique that detects tiny differences in refractive indices has been modified to detect the various regions in propagating fronts. Propagation distances and gradient profiles have been determined both mathematically and experimentally at various initiator concentrations and cure temperatures for IFP systems of methyl methacrylate with poly(methyl methacrylate) seeds and wilh the thermal initiator 2,2 -azobisisobutryonitrile. [Pg.169]
