These approaches go a step beyond the therapeutic classification scheme of Amidon and Lennernas (180), described in Chapter 4, or the Lipinsky Rule of 5 (20), described for predicting the suitability of a molecule as a drug candidate. Some of the models incorporate saturable drug transport. However, most of the models do not yet explicitly take into account the growing data on specific drug transporter molecules.

When a medicine registration application is received it is allocated a numeric code indicating the specific year in which it was received and the sequence it was received in. Once it is registered, the pharmacological or therapeutic classification is added (e.g., 33/20.1.1/0307 [reference to the year in which received/cintibiotic/ 307th application]). The numeric code for the year in which it is received replaced the letters of the alphabet originally used to denote the year.

It also contains presentation details (dosage form, strength), dates of application validation and opinion by the CHMP, and elapsed time (number of days) spent in review. 

Therapeutic Categories Projects have been classified according to their targets in terms of likely therapeutic markets. We adopted the ATC (Anatomic Therapeutic Classification) at the 3rd digit level. For example, HIV-antiviral correspond to the ATC3 class JSC.
