What do I consume when I purchase The Wizard ofOz Physically I buy a book, or a reel of videotape. But that is a raw material I consume two hours of entertainment. But should I say that, like Dorothy, I consumed a trip to Oz Or, to phrase it awkwardly, that I procured Dorothy s trip to Oz, in which I participated 1 do not mean a sight-seeing trip - television can always show me places that I cannot afford to visit - but the adventure, with the risk and poignancy and excitement and surprise. [Pg.181]

The authorial voice is quite muted in melodrama and overarching in docu-drama, but in hyperdrama it is powerful and passionate. After all, the goal of hyperdrama is the moral lesson, with the main character the vehicle for that lesson. In fact, the goal of the writer in hyperdrama is to convey that voice despite the viewer s involvement with the story. That is not to say we do not care for Dorothy in The Wizard ofOz. Rather we are much more aware of the writer s views on childhood, play, and the importance of the imagination.
