The Scale of Carbon Sequestration

By comparison, one of the largest sequestration projects to date, namely that in the Norwegian Sector of the North Sea (see Section 3.3 below), injects around 1 Mt CO2 (0.27 Mt of carbon) annually. Clearly, the USA alone would face a massive problem in terms of carbon disposal - a capability of at least 1000 times that of the North Sea facility would be required - if all its light vehicles were to be fuelled by hydrogen generated centrally from natural gas and/or coal. [Pg.70]

The above forecast does not consider other (non-vehicular) applications for hydrogen energy or the situation in other countries. Fortunately, however, there are a number of different sequestration possibilities. Many of these involve underground storage and potential geological sites are to be found throughout the world. [Pg.70]
