The Representation of Molecular Species and Reactions between Them

THE REPRESENTATION OF MOLECULAR SPECIES AND REACTIONS BETWEEN THEM [Pg.150]

We shall commonly abuse the language to the extent of abbreviating the phrase the Class I representation of a molecular species si to read the molecular species si . Since we are only concerned with Class I representations this will not cause any confusion. [Pg.150]

Remark 1. If all the atomic coefficients /3 are positive we speak (where necessary) of a proper molecular species. If all the /3( are zero we have the null or trivial species, and if any are negative a pseudo-species.  [Pg.150]

Remark 2. The elements are themselves molecular species with /3( = 8 s (Kronecker delta). [Pg.150]

Remark 3. Although the number of elements known to exist in the universe is finite, it is seldom necessary to consider more than a few of them in a particular universe of discourse. Thus large tracts of organic chemistry require only the three elements, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. [Pg.150]
