The Methylmercury-Sulfate Link

The linkage between sulfate reduction and methlymercury formation explained by Gilmour et al. (1998) and Orem and Krabbenhoft (2004) can be summarized as follows  

Soils and the plant detrital matter are important nutrient storage components of the Everglades ecosystem. Cycling of stored nutrients through various biogeochemical processes can have significant effect on the release or retention of nutrients, thus affecting the downstream surface water

Although phosphorus may no longer be limited to biota in the impacted zone, a high degree of phosphorus enrichment has induced nitrogen limitation.
