The isotopic composition of natural waters may be obtained either by direct measurement or by calculation using the method outlined above. Taylor (1974) describes six types of naturally occurring water, the compositions of which are summarized on a 5D vs 6 0 diagram (Figure 7.11). The isotopic character of the different types of water described here can be used to trace the origin of hydrothermal solutions.
