The International Consensus on Human Rights

The development of a broad international consensus about the importance of human rights is one of the outstanding achievements of the twentieth century. The concept of human rights may be described as  [Pg.106]

This is a highly aspirational statement, for although the declaration was adopted by representatives of states it is declared to be a common standard for which every individual and organ of society shall strive. Hence, the first article specifies both rights and obligations  [Pg.106]

All human beings are bom free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. [Pg.106]

In the present context it is also pertinent to note Article 27  [Pg.106]

Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits. [Pg.106]
