The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine IPEM

The IPEM was formed in 1995, by the merger of the Biological Engineering Society (bioengineering) and the Institute of Physical Sciences in Medicine (medical physics), which means that IPEM is Affiliated to IFMBE and lOMP (and to EAMBES and EFOMP). 

Alfred Nightingale was typical of many members of BES, who had their roots in physics but who found applications for their physics research in medicine through engineering. 

In 1979, BES launched its own journal, the Journal of Biological Engineering, which was renamed in 1994, as Medical Engineering and Physics. Jack (W. J.) Perkins was its first Editor and is remembered through the Perkins Prize . 

The number of BES members with physics roots was always a driver towards joint activities with IPSM. A number of joint Annual Scientific Meetings were held and for a number of years a joint membership directory was published. The overlapping membership of the two organisations eventually led to the 1995 merger, with an initial significant fall in income from member subscriptions, because a number of dual members now paid only one subscription and, inevitably, some members were not comfortable in a bigger, broader organisation and did not renew.
