The influence of pressure on surface tension

Kundt s measurements3 confirm this expectation and show decreases in the surface tension of several common liquids, increasing regularly with increase of pressure of the gas above them the decrease amounted to some 50 per cent, in some cases at about 150 atmospheres. The amount of decrease caused by the same pressure of gas increased in the order hydrogen-air-carbon dioxide, as would be expected from the fact that the residual affinities and tendency to condense of these gases increases in the same order. 

If the air in the tube is evacuated, leaving only the vapour of the liquid, there is usually a slight, barely measurable, increase in the surface tension.4

The influence of pressure on surface tensions is less pronounced than that of temperature. So, for practiced purposes this counterpart is not that relevant. However, its interpretation gives rise to some interesting academic issues. Here the mcun aspects are briefly considered.
