The End of History

The book is divided into two main sections - Representations and Realities . Of course, I am aware that the realities that I offer in the second part of the book are simply my representations of the realities as I see and reconstruct them. My hope is that others will find them a persuasive, or at least a suggestive, account, not that they will be treated as the end of history so far as my subject is concerned. [Pg.8]

At this stage of my enquiry 1 can draw only a few tentative conclusions from the case-histories presented above. I shall return at the end of the book to the issue of how disciplines evolve and when, to adopt biological parlance, a new discipline becomes self-fertile. [Pg.50]

The expl nature of N trichloride has been known since the end of the 18th century when Sir H. Davy reported, The fulminating oil which you mentioned roused my curiosity and nearly deprived me of an eye. After some months confinement I am again well. (Ref 12). The early history of this compd is reviewed in this Ref. It is readily prepd by the action of Cl on ammonia or Amm salts (Refs 2,6 13) or by the electrolysis of an unstirred coned soln of Amm chloride at 35—40° (Ref 4). A procedure for the prepn of a soln of N trichloride in chlf is described In Ref 1, and prepn on an industrial scale in Ref 7... [Pg.305]

Traditionally, because of the history of the discovery of QM, experience has been equated to experiments. Experiments with macroscopic devices involve measurement theory, which most physicist agree is the most difficult and least understood part of QM. These are therefore often unclear, confusing and contradictory. They are the wrong place to provide experience. They are absolutely essential to verify the correctness of QM, but as the most difficult part of QM they should be treated at the end of the course, not at the beginning. Also it is not sufficient to provide a few experiences, but a thorough immersion is required. Hence my choice of the word journey a short visit will not do. [Pg.27]

We chose to adopt a simplified format for producing the second edition. Rather than completely rewriting the book, brief updates were added at the ends of the chapters. This greatly simplified the production of the second edition, with possible incidental pedagogical benefits. Chromatographic history, basic theory, and standard applications are available in the main chapters, while the updates deliver the latest news. [Pg.467]
