Tetraphosphorous acid

Dilution of polyphosphoric acids with water in absence of cooling may lead to a large exotherm. Thus, tetraphosphoric acid diluted from 84 to 54% phosphorus pentoxide content rapidly attains a temperature of 120-140°C. [Pg.1695]

Orthophosphoric acid of 95% concentration is most efficient for effecting cleavage of tetrahydrofuran. Commercial orthophosphoric acid (85%) may be used however, the yield drops to 82% and approximately 10% of the tetrahydrofuran is recovered. Anhydrous orthophosphoric acid and tetraphosphoric acid cannot be employed conveniently because of the limited solubility of hydrogen iodide in these reagents. [Pg.18]

PROBLEM 19.9 Elimination of water from H3P04 leads to the formation of tetraphosphoric acid, H6P4013. Write a balanced equation for the reaction. Draw structural formulas for H3P04 and H6P4Oi3, and show how elimination of water gives H6P4013. [Pg.843]

Commercial tetraphosphoric acid contains about 82.5 per cent phosphorus(V) oxide (theory, 84 per cent). Three grams of water or 12 g. of 85 per cent orthophosphoric acid should be added for each 100-g. portion of the acid. The water or acid is added slowly with agitation. Stirring will be difficult at first because of the very high viscosity of the starting material, but the heat of dilution will serve to decrease the viscosity rapidly. [Pg.97]
