Tetrahydroisoquinoline monoterpene

Alangium lamarckii is a medicinal plant that accumulates tetrahydroisoquinoline monoterpene alkaloids for the production of compounds such as emetine, a constituent of ipecacuantha emetic mixture that is used to for the treatment of drug overdose. Historically, this mixture has also been used to treat amoebic dysentery by South American Indians. [Pg.194]

From the dried roots of C. ipecacuanha, Nagakura and co-workers (17,18) isolated six new tetrahydroisoquinoline-monoterpene glucosides, that is, 6-O-methylipecoside (8), ipecosidic acid (10), neoipecoside (15), 7-0-methylneoipecoside (16), 3,4-dehydroneoipecoside (17) (conceivably an artifact formed from 15 in the extraction process), and demethylalangiside... [Pg.291]

The isoquinoline alkaloids are the second largest group of alkaloids, numbering about 6000, and can be viewed as five subgroups—the simple tetrahydroisoquinolines, the benzylisoquinolines, the phenethylisoquinolines, the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, and the monoterpene isoquinolines. In addition, there are a number of simple phenethylamine derivatives, including ephedrine (originally from Ephedra species, but now synthesized) and pseudoephedrine, used for asthma and nasal... [Pg.248]
