Tetradium

Feeding experiments with [3- C]tryptophan, [ Clfor-mate, [ CH3]methionine, and pHjanthranilic acid in the plant Tetradium Euodia) rutaecarpa, indicated that all labels were incorporated into rutaecarpine (11) and evodia-mine (12). The Ci unit of methionine or formate was incorporated into the 13 position of both alkaloids and into the V-methyl group of evodiamine (Bergman, 1983 Cordell, 1981). 

The dried fruits of Tetradium (Euodia) rutaecarpa have long been used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of headaches, abdominal pain, dysentery, postpartum hemorrhage, and amenorrhea (Bergman, 1983). The alkaloids from these fruits have marked uterotonic effects (King et al., 1980). 

Quinolones are rather rare alkaloids, known only from Tetradium, Ruta, Vepris, and Ptelea (Ng et al., 1987) (Fig. 31.11). 

Alkaloids of the benzylisoquinoline type occur mostly in the genera Fagaropsis, Phellodendron, Tetradium, Toddalia (Toddalioideae), and Zanthoxylum Fagara) (Rutoideae) a group of genera considered to represent the proto-Ruta-ceae (Ng et al., 1987 Waterman and Khalid, 1981).
