The MejSi protecting groups in 58 a and 59 a could be removed by treatment with sodium tetraborate (borax) in MeOH/THF, yielding 58c and 59 c, respectively, as very unstable compounds [84]. Coumarins are pharmacologically active and have been used in the treatment of a diverse range of diseases. The great diversity of coumarin structures and their wide range of polarities present special problems for their simultaneous analysis. The separation of seven closely related coumarins by CZE was studied. Optimized conditions tallied with a 200 mM boric acid—50 mM tetraborate buffer pH 8.5 and were applied to the determination of coumarins in extracts from roots and aerial parts from the plant Chrysanthemum segetum. Early studies involved treatment of wood specimens with fire-retardant chemicals, then subjecting the treated specimens to thermal analysis by TG. In the mid-1950s, naphthalene flakes were introduced. Naphthalene is oil soluble and sublimes at about 175°F, making it applicable to oil wells and gas wells of moderate temperature.
