A good way to start sequencing is to begin near the precursor mass. Mass differences between precursor and first ions in C- and N-terminal series are specific to the ion series. Using this approach, we may be able to identify first N- and C-terminal amino acids, respectively. 

The base fragment ion series due to amide bond cleavages are formed by b-ions on the N-terminus and y-ions on the C-terminus. The signals of the a-ions are set off to lower mass by 28 u (CO loss) from the b-ions, while c-ions are 17 u (NH3) heavier than b-ions as the adjacent N-C bond is cleaved. The x-ions of the C-terminal series are by 26 u lighter than y-ions (minus CO, plus H2) and z-ions are again by 17 u (NH3) heavier than y-ions.

The effect of forming a more rigid structure in fluorescent dyes of the rhodamine series has been clearly demonstrated (18) with the remarkable dye designated Rhodamine 101 [41175A3-3] (19). This dye has its terminal nitrogen atoms each held in two rings and has a fluorescence quantum yield of virtually 100% independent of the temperature. 

Carboxylic Acid Esters. In the carboxyflc acid ester series of surfactants, the hydrophobe, a naturally occurring fatty acid, is solubilized with the hydroxyl groups of polyols or the ether and terminal hydroxyl groups of ethylene oxide chains. 

Oligomerization of Ethylene. 1-Butene is a small by-product in the production of linear alpha-olefins by oligomerisation of ethylene. Linear alpha-olefins have one double bond at the terminal position and comprise the homologous series of compounds with carbon atoms between 4 and 19. The primary use of alpha-olefins is in the detergent industry. About 245,000 t/yr of 1-butene was produced for chemical use in the Gulf Coast of the United States in 1988 (72). 

Bismaleimides are best defined as low molecular weight, at least diftinctional monomers or prepolymers, or mixtures thereof, that carry maleimide terminations (Eig. 3). Such maleimide end groups can undergo homopolymerization and a wide range of copolymerizations to form a highly cross-linked network. These cure reactions can be effected by the appHcation of heat and, if required, ia the presence of a suitable catalyst. The first patent for cross-linked resias obtained through the homopolymerization or copolymerization of BMI was granted to Rhc ne Poulenc, Erance, ia 1968 (13). Shordy after, a series of patents was issued on poly(amino bismaleimides) (14), which are synthesized from bismaleimide and aromatic diamines. 

Such relays are in the form of a small tube inside which is a loosely fitted rotatable shaft, held by a very thin film of this alloy. The alloy senses the motor temperature through a heater connected in series with the motor terminals and surrounding this tube. When the motor current exceeds the predetermined value, the alloy melts and enables the shaft to rotate and actuate the lever of the tripping mechanism.
